Issue

Error: Invalid image or image file format header missing (3510:11 or 3513:11)

The following errors may occur when deploying an image: Invalid image or image file format header missing. An overlap condition was found. -1917452277 3510:11 -230227979  3513:11 -1917386763 3510:65525  (This code translates to an error code 11, which is a invalid image code)

Cause

The source hard drive where the image was captured is larger than the target hard drive where the image is being restored. There was data on the source hard drive in an area of the drive that does not exist on the target hard drive. Imagew.exe captures images bit for bit. This can be a problem when restoring to a smaller hard drive.

  • This could also be caused by an invalid image.

Resolution

  1. Recapture image on smaller drive.
  2. Use larger drive for target machines.
  3. Use a partitioning utility to shrink the source partition to be smaller than the smallest hard drive the image will be deployed to, then recapture the image.
  4. If using DOS based imaging follow KB article 1915 and resize the partition on the image capture.
  5. Use windows defrag utility before capturing the source image.

  • The other thing to run is an image validation.

Run IMAGEW.exe from the OSD folder and point the validation tool to the image you are trying to deploy.
