Imaging machines with LANDesk Agent installed

Problem

Creating an image of a machine with a LANDesk Management Agent installed can cause the machines, which receive the image, to overwrite each other in the database.

Cause

LANDesk Inventory looks at a Unique ID/Device ID when inserting the scan. This ID is created on install of the client.

Resolution

Important:

It is strongly recommended that the LANDesk agent not be included in an image.  The recommended way to install the LANDesk Agent with imaging is to use the Sysprep or unattend.txt file. LANDesk integrates with  Sysprep by adding commands to the GUIRunOnce section to install the LANDesk Agent once the image has been restored to a workstation.  Besides causing duplicate devices, the LANDesk agent is often updated and adding it to the image will quickly cause your image to be outdated and within a short time, you will have to be reinstalling the agent after laying down the image anyway.

If the agent must be included in the image, then the unique identifiers must be deleted out of the registry prior to the capture of the image.  Before creating an image of the machine do the following:

LANDesk Mangement Suite 8.1 - 8.8

  1. Search for and Delete all instances of LDISCAN.CFG Note: This is a hidden file
  2. Delete HKLM\Software\Intel\LANDesk\CommonAPI\UniqueID
  3. Delete HKLM\Software\LANDesk\CommonAPI\UniqueID

LANDeskMangement Suite 9.0 and later

  1. Install the LANDesk agent, then STOP all LANDesk related services
  2. Delete the following: For 32bit clients -  HKLM\Software\Intel\LANDesk\CommonAPI\UniqueID and for 64bit clients - HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Intel\LANDesk\CommonAPI\UniqueID
  3. Delete the following: For 32bit clients -  HKLM\Software\LANDesk\CommonAPI\UniqueID and for 64bit clients - HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\LANDesk\CommonAPI\UniqueID
  4. On XP delete C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\LANDesk (delete the entire directory and subdirectories)
  5. On Windows 7 delete C:\ProgramData\LANDesk (delete the entire directory and subdirectories)
  6. Run from command line (as administrator) "clientdbutil.exe /create" from the \ldclient directory
  7. Verify that a new database was created in the same path as you deleted above
